Windblown Jackie
Photographer: Ron Galella
Date: October 4, 1971
Location: Madison Avenue, New York City, USA
Ron Galella, one of the most famous paparazzi photographers of the 20th century, photographed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis emerging from the Parke-Bernet art auction house on Madison Avenue in New York City on October 4, 1971, her hair blown by the wind in a natural, unguarded moment. The photograph became one of the most celebrated candid portraits of Jackie O and one of the defining images of celebrity photography. Galella had a uniquely contentious relationship with his most famous subject: Jackie sued him in 1972 for harassment, winning a restraining order that required him to stay at least 50 feet away from her. He later violated the order and was found in contempt. In 1982, a new agreement reduced the distance to 25 feet. Despite the legal battles, Galella's photographs of Jackie are considered masterpieces of the genre. He published a book of his Jackie photographs, 'Jacqueline' (1974).
