The Tetons and the Snake River
Photographer: Ansel Adams
Date: 1942
Location: Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA
Ansel Adams photographed the Grand Teton mountain range with the Snake River winding through the foreground in 1942, from a high vantage point in what is now Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. The image exemplifies Adams's zone system approach and his mastery of large-format photography. The image was included on the Voyager Golden Record in 1977 — a gold-plated copper disc sent into space aboard Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 containing sounds and images intended to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth for any intelligent extraterrestrial life that might encounter it. The selection of the image for the Golden Record cemented its status as one of the most representative American photographs of the 20th century.
