Spectre of Newby Church
Photographer: Rev. K.F. Lord
Date: 1963
Location: Newby Church, North Yorkshire, UK
Reverend K.F. Lord photographed what appears to be a tall, skeletal, shrouded figure with a white face standing near the altar of St Mary's Church in Skelton-cum-Newby, North Yorkshire, England, in 1963. Lord claimed he did not see any figure when he took the photograph. Published in a 1964 book, it became one of the most widely reproduced alleged ghost photographs of the 20th century. Photographic experts and paranormal investigators have examined the image over the decades. Skeptics believe the figure was a person in a mask and costume deliberately placed in the frame. The photograph has never been definitively explained or debunked to universal satisfaction, though its staged appearance is widely noted.
