Solvay Conference 1927
Photographer: Benjamin Couprie
Date: October 1927
Location: Brussels, Belgium
Belgian chemist Benjamin Couprie photographed the Fifth Solvay International Conference on Physics in Brussels in October 1927, gathering 29 of the world's most prominent physicists for discussions on electrons and photons. The attendees included Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schrödinger, Wolfgang Pauli, Paul Dirac, Max Planck, and many others. Of the 29 people photographed, 17 were or became Nobel Prize laureates. The conference took place at the height of the development of quantum mechanics, with Einstein and Bohr engaged in their famous debates about the interpretation of the new theory. The photograph is often described as the greatest gathering of scientific minds in history.
