Lyle Owerko photographed the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, documenting the burning Twin Towers and the chaos in the streets below. Owerko was in lower Manhattan when the attacks occurred and captured some of the most compelling images of the day, showing both the scale of the destruction and the human response. His photographs were published in Time magazine and numerous international outlets. The September 11 attacks, carried out by al-Qaeda, killed 2,977 people across New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania and became the deadliest terrorist attack in world history. Owerko's documentation of the day contributed to the comprehensive visual record of the attacks. He later published a book, 'Towers of Light,' featuring his photographs from that day.
