SCOTUS in session
Photographer: Erich Salomon
Date: 1932
Location: Supreme Court, Washington, D.C., USA
Erich Salomon, a pioneering German photojournalist known as the 'father of candid photography,' surreptitiously photographed the United States Supreme Court in session in the 1930s — a time when cameras were (and remain today) strictly forbidden inside the courtroom. Salomon was renowned for his ability to gain access to otherwise closed rooms and photograph important figures unawares, using a small Ermanox camera concealed in various ways. He photographed world leaders, diplomats, and heads of state across Europe and the United States. Salomon was arrested by the Nazis in 1943 and died at Auschwitz in 1944. His candid, intimate photographs helped establish the norms of modern photojournalism.
