This behind-the-scenes image shows filmmaker Peter Jackson working with actor Ian McKellen during the production of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Jackson, the director, co-writer, and producer of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, oversaw the ambitious adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic, combining large-scale practical sets, detailed miniatures (“bigatures”), and groundbreaking visual effects developed in New Zealand. McKellen portrays Gandalf, the wise wizard and one of the story’s central leaders, who plays a crucial role in defending the city of Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor, during the climactic battles of the War of the Ring. The scene being filmed relates to the Siege of Minas Tirith, one of the trilogy’s most dramatic sequences. Shot primarily in New Zealand between 1999 and 2000, the production became one of the most influential fantasy film projects in cinema history, with The Return of the King later winning 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, cementing the trilogy’s legacy as a landmark achievement in epic filmmaking.
