Janez Puhar avtoportret
Photographer: Janez Puhar
Date: c. 1841
Location: Kranj, Slovenia (then Austrian Empire)
Janez Puhar was a Slovenian priest and inventor who independently developed a photographic process using glass plates around 1840–1841 — a process he called 'fotografija na steklo' (photography on glass). This self-portrait, one of the earliest known photographs taken in the territory of present-day Slovenia, shows Puhar's process at work. His invention was recognized by the Académie Nationale Agricole, Manufacturière et Commerciale in Paris in 1852, making him the first person from Central Europe to receive such recognition for photographic innovation. Puhar is considered a pioneer of Slovenian and Central European photographic history. His invention was made in Kranj, then part of the Austrian Empire.
