Into the Jaws of Death
Photographer: Robert F. Sargent
Date: June 6, 1944
Location: Omaha Beach, Normandy, France
Robert F. Sargent, a U.S. Coast Guard Chief Photographer's Mate, photographed American troops disembarking from a Coast Guard LCVP landing craft into the surf at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944 — D-Day. The image was taken from inside the landing craft looking toward the shore, capturing the iconic view of soldiers wading through waist-deep water under enemy fire toward the beach. The photograph has become one of the defining images of D-Day and of World War II as a whole. It was officially titled 'Into the Jaws of Death — The first wave of American troops land on the beaches of France' by the U.S. Coast Guard. The image is held in the U.S. National Archives.
