Hollyweed
Date: January 1, 1976
Location: Hollywood Sign, Los Angeles, USA
On January 1, 1976, a California State Polytechnic University student named Daniel Finegood altered the famous Hollywood Sign — originally erected in 1923 as an advertisement for a real estate development — by draping sheets over portions of the letters to change 'Hollywood' to read 'Hollyweed.' The prank, which took about 45 minutes, was a reference to California's partial decriminalization of marijuana (Proposition 19), which had gone into effect that day. Finegood received an 'A' on the art project. The sign was altered back by the next morning. The same prank has been repeated several times, most recently on January 1, 2017, by an unknown perpetrator.
