Einstein sticks his tongue out
Photographer: Arthur Sasse (UPI)
Date: March 14, 1951
Location: Princeton, New Jersey, USA
Arthur Sasse of United Press International photographed Albert Einstein sticking out his tongue at the end of his 72nd birthday party on March 14, 1951, at Princeton, New Jersey. After hours of posing for reporters, Einstein was asked to smile for the camera one more time as he got into a car to leave. Instead, he stuck out his tongue. Sasse captured the moment, and the resulting photograph became one of the most iconic and beloved portraits of the scientist. Einstein himself liked the image so much that he requested prints and signed several, including one with a note: 'This gesture you will like, because it is aimed at all of humanity.' The original print sold at auction in 2009 for $74,324.
