Photographs by the Korea Summit Press Pool document the inter-Korean summit on April 27, 2018, at which North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stepped across the Military Demarcation Line at Panmunjom — becoming the first North Korean leader to cross into South Korean territory since the Korean War armistice was signed in 1953. Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held hands and briefly stepped into North Korean territory together. The summit produced the Panmunjom Declaration, in which both sides pledged to work toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, reduce military tensions, and improve inter-Korean relations. The meeting was widely described as historic. Subsequent negotiations between North Korea and the United States under President Trump, including two summits in 2018 and 2019, ultimately failed to produce a comprehensive agreement.
