Rich Lam of Getty Images photographed Scott Jones, a 29-year-old Australian, lying in the street of Vancouver embracing his girlfriend Alex Thomas after riot police moved in with batons following the Vancouver Canucks' loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals on June 15, 2011. Jones had knocked Thomas to the ground to shield her when police charged; he comforted her on the ground as chaos erupted around them. The photograph went viral overnight, received widespread international media coverage, and became one of the most widely shared images of 2011 — a symbol of tenderness amid destruction. The Vancouver riots caused approximately $5 million in damage and led to over 300 arrests.
